about

I've always played these two songs together because they are both capoed up the neck in the key of C. The two work together as both the work of making a home in this world and the latter is me appreciating how very fortunate I am. The second song is based on a true story, a childhood neighbor of my wife's who always had a thing for her. Dave and Christine Duncan add so much to the first song, and T.J. Lundy and Mark Arnold really bring it home on the final piece of the track. Of course, once again, a stellar rhythm section of Sam Nobles and Ritchie Rubini get that train moving and grooving.

lyrics

Leave your baggage at the station and we can drive straight out tonight. Can’t ride the rails if your heart is frail or you’re feeling too uptight. Got a heavy weight upon your shoulders when you tell yourself, you’re getting older.

Leave your baggage at the station, there ain’t nothing that you need. All the billboards were so bold and shiny and draw by the cold hand of need. All you gotta do is get here just before the sun goes down. Quit looking in your rearview mirror, it will only let you down.

When you’re looking for your way to the simple life, you find that path is overgrown. You gotta cut it back with your own knife if you want to call it home.
Leave your baggage at the station cause we must do some erasin’. Gotta clean up this canvas to make some room for all those little flowers growing brighter by the hour. Takes a whole lotta love to see them bloom.

When you’re looking for your way to the simple life, you find that path is overgrown. You gotta cut it back with your own knife if you want to call it home.

So much to be thankful for
Sometimes it’s easy to forget. That some of the sweetest moments in my life haven’t even happened yet. But I’ve loved our trip thus far. Hung on through some bumps in the road with you. But you lifted my head up to the stars and brought the sunshine into view.
Heaven knows that I’m a lucky man. So does little Joey, who grew up on your street. Though he’s not so little anymore, he had such a crush on you, and he once told me what I already knew.
When he heard that we were married and the tears welled in his eyes. He said you were the only woman that could ever make him cry. And he bowed his head when he shook my hand and said, “Damn you, you’re a lucky man.”

I wake up to your smiling face. I fall asleep with your kiss. I feel my heartbeat in your embrace. It’s like I’ve been granted every wish. And every now and then I smile to myself, though little Joey might say that I gloat, but it’s in your eyes that I see my wealth and from your breath that I draw my hope.

And I still remember little Joey on his saddest day. When the sky for him it must have been dark and gray. How he bowed his head when he shook my hand and he said “Damn you, you’re a lucky man”.
